As you may recall, earlier this year, Joshua Broomfield met a tragic and needless death as a result of gang violence. It was a young and promising life ended much too soon. His mother (Angela Broomfield) and I have been in contact periodically since that time. As you might well imagine, she has experienced and certainly will continue to experience deep and unimaginable pain. As we continue to pray for Angela and other family members, the good news is that Angela is working toward self-healing and recently shared the excitement of becoming involved in a movement to help not just herself, but to help others, and also work toward the goal of a society that no longer dispenses or experiences such horrors. Angela’s very generous nature moved her to allow me, and actually to encourage me to share the following information in the newsletter.

BELOW - Angela’s Message to me below regarding her selection:
I'm so excited!
This is really good for keeping Josh’s memory alive. It's the opportunity we've been praying for because they will make resources available to me for developing an ART program to use as a means for coping with grief. I'll get to teach others how to celebrate the LIFE of their loved one instead of becoming mired in misery and despair. The art program will be in Josh’s memory. I had to write an essay on why I should be considered for a scholarship to attend (I was coached by the Detroit Police Dept Victims of Violent Crimes team to share my story about Josh and our art). My essay is attached if you want to know what they used to select me for a scholarship.
Thanks so much for your PRAYERS and your love and your support. May and June were very difficult months, but the GRACE of GOD and the prayers of family/friends like you got me through it.
Love ya much, Angela

BELOW – Angela’s Application to NOVA
ANGELA l. WALKER - SURVIVOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION:
Special Reasons Statement
There are several reasons I feel the need to attend the 2009 NOVA Conference:
1. I want to find ways to celebrate my son’s LIFE (not become mired in the misery of his death) and help others to rise above the pain and tragedy of being victims 2. I want to speak out against intentional and/or random acts of violence among the youth in our community & throughout the Metro Detroit area 3. I want to be a motivational voice that touches others and helps them to uncover specific ways they, too, can celebrate the lives of their loved ones instead of becoming entrenched in grief and despair
My son was shot over 30 times with an AK 47 in my mother’s driveway; an “ordered hit” meant for someone else… a tragic case of mistaken identity! I spent my entire adult life as a mother trying to help my son explore ways to live his life to its fullest; to discover the power of purpose and set realistic goals to live out his life’s mission. At the young age of 20, his life was cut short due to the use of a permanent solution to a temporary problem/dispute.
The violence has to stop… things need to change… I’ve looked in the mirror everyday and thought of how I can affect positive change in the lives of people around me so that others do not have to experience the pain I feel in having loss my son so tragically.

BELOW – In Conclusion (from the Editor)
Angela is coping with adversity, the likes of which few can imagine, in a commendable way. Although we cannot turn back the clock, we need to be there for her in any way we can. This is what family is about, going and growing through the hard times as well as enjoying the good times. It is a reminder that whatever our real or imagined problems, whatever issues we might have with one another, that each of us are or should be important to all the rest.
If you would like to contact Angela, please send your request for her e-mail address to admin@hansiesolomon.org.
